Interview with 2025 Faculty Mentoring Award Winner, Ronit Freeman

Last month we announced that Dr. Freeman would be recognized for her outstanding mentorship with graduate students. The Office of the Provost at UNC published an article and interview with Ronit. Read about it here:

Ronit Freeman, associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, is one of three recipients of the 2025 Faculty Mentoring Awards from the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council.

The Mentoring Awards recognize outstanding faculty members who have demonstrated exemplary mentorship, contributing significantly to the growth and success of both students and colleagues. Awardees receive $7,000 before taxes.

Freeman received recognition for faculty-to-graduate student mentoring. The nominations that led to her recognition highlight how Freeman embodies the qualities of a successful, caring and confident mentor.

“Ronit consistently went above and beyond to mentor me and other students in the lab to an unfathomably high standard, and she provided support with both our personal and professional journeys, even when that meant meeting us wherever and whenever we needed her — weekends or late at night — she was there,” One nominator said.

“Ronit has always thought outside the box on how to instill me with the experience I need to become an excellent teacher, above being a good scientist,” another wrote. “This experience paved my path to becoming an educator in my future career, and the lessons I have learned formed a solid foundation for my future life.”

“During my Ph.D. and under Ronit’s mentorship, I published a total of seven papers, with an additional six that are in the process of publication,” a third nominator said. “This amazing opportunity to excel and work on real-world problems opened the door for me to exciting career opportunities post-graduation.”
